Do You Really Need a Touch Up?

By 18. May 2026No Comments7 min read

A few weeks after your Permanent Makeup treatment, you look in the mirror and something feels off. The brows look softer. The color seems lighter. Maybe a little uneven in places. And the question follows almost immediately: Did something go wrong?

In most cases, the answer is no. PMU fading after healing is biology, not a mistake – and understanding why it happens makes all the difference.

PMU on Day One Is Not the Final Result

Right after treatment, pigment sits close to the surface of the skin. The color looks darker, warmer, and more defined than it will after healing. Over the following weeks, the skin closes and renews itself. Some pigment is retained, some is naturally pushed out. The visible result becomes softer – sometimes significantly so.

This is not a flaw in the technique. It is how skin works.

Why Some Skin Retains Pigment Better Than Others

Even with perfect technique and high-quality pigments, healed results vary from client to client. The most common factors:

  • Skin type: Oily skin pushes out pigment more readily than dry or normal skin – one of the main reasons fine hair strokes can heal softer.
  • Metabolism and immune system: Some bodies break down pigment faster than others.
  • Skin structure: Coarse, large-pored, sun-damaged, or mature skin absorbs pigment differently than fine, stable skin.
  • Bleeding or lymph fluid during treatment: Excess fluid during the procedure can carry pigment out before it settles.
  • Previous PMU or scar tissue: Old pigment and altered tissue affect how evenly new pigment is absorbed.
  • Hormones and medication: Thyroid conditions, hormonal changes, retinol, and certain medications can all influence pigment retention.
  • Aftercare: Water, sweat, sun exposure, and touching the treated area during healing all play a role.

Sometimes clients follow every aftercare instruction precisely and still heal lighter than expected. That is why Permanent Makeup is always a process – not a single fixed result on day one.

Nano Brows: Why the Front of the Brow Often Heals Softer

Nano Brows are designed to mimic the look of natural hair – which means the strokes are intentionally fine and precise. That delicacy comes with variable pigment retention, particularly depending on skin type.

In our experience, around 30% of Nano Brows clients benefit from a Touch Up. For oily, large-pored, or sun-damaged skin, that number can be higher. This is completely normal and does not reflect on the quality of the treatment.

One area that consistently heals softer is the front of the brow, near the nose. This zone tends to be oilier, and the strokes there are created more softly to keep the transition natural. Less pigment retention in this area is expected – and it is exactly the kind of detail that can be refined during a Touch Up if needed.

A Real Example – The Healing Journey in Three Steps

The following photos show how a Nano Brows result can evolve from the first session through to a completed Touch Up.

Lip Blush: When Clients Want More Intensity After Healing

Lip Blush is another treatment where the Touch Up step is very personal. Many clients choose a soft, natural color for their first session out of caution. After healing, they often find that they love the effect – and simply want a little more color, more freshness, or more definition.

This is one of the most common and completely valid reasons for a Lip Blush Touch Up. Starting soft and building intensity step by step is often the most elegant approach – and the one most likely to create a result that still looks natural 2-3 years from now.

Is a Touch Up Always Necessary?

No. Some clients heal beautifully after one session and are fully satisfied with the result. If the shape, color, and balance all feel right, there is no reason to add more pigment.

A Touch Up makes sense when:

  • some areas healed lighter than others
  • the overall result feels too soft for your preference
  • small gaps or uneven areas are visible
  • you started very naturally and now want a little more definition
  • your skin type naturally retained less pigment

A Touch Up is not needed when:

  • you are happy with the healed intensity
  • the shape looks balanced and full
  • you prefer a very natural, understated result

When to Book a Touch Up – and Why Timing Matters

The skin needs enough time to heal fully before more pigment is added. The earliest window for a Touch Up is usually four to six weeks after the first session. In some cases, waiting longer makes sense – especially if the skin is still changing or the client is unsure whether more intensity is truly needed.

Never evaluate a PMU result during the peeling or fading phase. Always wait for fully healed skin before making any decisions.

What Happens During a Touch Up?

A Touch Up is not a repeat of the first treatment. It is more targeted and more refined. The artist evaluates which areas retained color well, which areas need more pigment, and whether any adjustments to shape or tone are needed.

For brows, this might mean adding strokes, improving density, or balancing the front. For lips, it often means building color or evening out softer areas. For eyeliner, it may mean refining small zones where pigment healed lighter.

Our Approach at BBZ Bali

We prefer to build results carefully rather than create something too strong from the beginning. A softer first session gives the skin time to heal and gives the client time to experience the look in daily life before deciding whether more intensity is wanted.

Adding more pigment later is straightforward. Correcting a result that was placed too strongly is a much more complex process. That is why our approach has always been: refine gradually, and let the skin guide the result.

A Touch Up is not a sign that something went wrong. It is often simply the second step of a carefully planned PMU process – and sometimes the step that completes it.

If you have questions about your healing result or would like to discuss whether a Touch Up is right for you, we are happy to advise you personally at BBZ Bali.
