PMU Healing Process

You just had your Permanent Makeup done – brows, lips, or eyeliner – and you’re looking in the mirror thinking: is this really how it’s going to look? The answer is no. What you see right now is not your final result. The healing phase is where the real magic happens, and knowing what to expect makes all the difference between unnecessary worry and quiet confidence.

Here is what your skin is doing – day by day.

Day 1 – Right After Your Treatment

The area may feel slightly tender, tight, or sensitive. Some redness or mild swelling is completely normal and usually settles within a few hours. The pigment will look significantly darker and more intense than your final healed result – this is expected and temporary.

For the first few hours, gently blot the area with a clean tissue every 30 minutes to absorb any excess lymph fluid. Do not apply water, makeup, or skincare products to the treated area. Let the skin rest.

Days 2–3 – The Dark Phase

The colour may deepen further as the pigment oxidises beneath the surface of the skin. Your brows, lips, or liner might look bolder or more intense than you expected. This is one of the most common moments where clients feel uncertain – and it is one of the most normal parts of the process.

Trust it. The skin is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Days 4–7 – The Flaking Phase

The top layer of skin begins to naturally flake and peel away. This is the skin’s way of healing itself. It is very important not to pick, scratch, or peel anything manually – doing so can pull pigment out with it and create uneven or patchy areas.

Let the flakes fall away on their own. You may gently cleanse the area with water and a very mild, fragrance-free cleanser if Zahra has advised this. Avoid swimming, saunas, steam, sweat, and direct sun exposure during this phase.

Days 8–14 – The Ghosting Phase

This is the phase that surprises almost everyone. The pigment may appear to have almost completely vanished. The colour looks very faint, washed out, or barely there. Many clients message us at this point wondering if something went wrong.

Nothing went wrong. This is called the ghosting phase, and it is a completely normal part of PMU healing. What is happening is that a fresh layer of skin has closed over the treated area, temporarily muting the colour. Underneath, the skin is still regenerating and settling. The pigment is still there – it simply needs more time to surface.

Patience is the only thing needed here.

Days 15–30 – Colour Returns

Gradually, the true colour and shape begin to emerge. The result looks softer, more natural, and more refined than it did on day one. Some areas may still appear slightly uneven or lighter in certain spots – this is completely normal and is exactly what the touch-up appointment is designed to address.

After 4–6 Weeks – Your Touch-Up Appointment

Once the skin has fully healed – which typically takes between four and six weeks – it is time for your touch-up. This is where everything comes together. Zahra assesses how your skin retained the pigment, refines any areas that healed softer or lighter, balances the shape, and adjusts the colour if needed.

A touch-up is not a correction for something that went wrong. It is a planned second step – and often the one that completes the result.

Aftercare – The Essentials

How you care for the treated area in the first weeks has a real impact on how well your result heals. The most important rules:

  • Keep the area dry for the first 7–10 days. No swimming, saunas, steam, or heavy sweating.
  • Do not apply makeup, skincare, or any products to the treated area until fully healed.
  • Use only the ointment or healing balm recommended by Zahra, if applicable.
  • Sleep on your back to avoid friction on the treated area.
  • Protect healed PMU from direct sun exposure – UV accelerates fading.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or rub – even when it itches. Especially when it itches.

Every Skin Heals Differently

Some clients sail through the healing process with minimal change. Others experience stronger ghosting, more flaking, or slower colour return. Skin type, lifestyle, hormones, aftercare, and individual healing speed all play a role.

What stays the same is this: with patience and proper aftercare, the healed result is almost always softer, more natural, and more wearable than the fresh result on day one. And if anything needs refining after healing – that is what the touch-up is for.

You are in good hands. Healing just takes a little time.
